Historical Figure: PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN

RONALD WILSON REAGAN

FEBRUARY 6TH 1911- JUNE 5th 2004

Ronald Reagan was born to Jack and Nelle Reagan on february 6th 1911 in Tampico, Illinois.

Reagan had another older brother, aned Neil. He was nicknamed "dutch" by his father cause he supposedly looked like a "little fat dutchman" when he was born. Reagan's childhood was not the best a child should've had. He lived and witnessed how his father was an alcoholic and a dreamer. His father had been Roman-Catholic and his mother a member of Deciples of Christ. The reagan family was known to be democratic and have strong beliefs against racial and religious intolerance. After the death of Jack Reagan, Ronald's older brother, Neil took over his father spot, and Ronald which was raised in the church of his mother was more like his mother. In the course of time they would all participate in church drama's and acting activities. Life was hard for the three of them and their mother had to work hard to support them as a salesclerk and seamstress.

Ronald Reagan graduated from Dixon High School in 1928, where he played on the football and basketball teams, became president of the student body, acted in school plays, and wrote for the yearbook. In 1928 Reagan enrolled at Eureka College in Peoria. He majored in economics and graduated with a "C" average in 1932. While in college, he played football and was a member of the college swim team, joined the drama club, joined the debate club, worked as a reporter on the school newspaper, edited the college yearbook, and served as president of the student council. he also had some struggles to pay his college tuition with lots of hard work, he paid it off with money he'd saved up and scholarships he'd recieved.

After Ronald had graduated from college he went in search of a job. He wanted to become an actor but was a little too embarassed to tell his family so insted he went for something more easy. He decided to go find a job as a sports radio announcer. Before he went he'd told his mother, but had not told his father. He went to the city of Chicago to search for the job he wanted, but when he was there he got rejected by many radio stations because of his lack of experience. He went back home instead feeling given up and actually told his father and his father actually supported him and actually tried helping him out. After the long search he found a job as a radio sportscaster at WOC in Davenport, Iowa, for $10 per game and transportation expenses. By 1936, he was earning a salary with his recreations of Chicago Cubs baseball games and his sportscasts of Big Ten football. In 1937, he went to California to cover the spring training of the Chicago Cubs—and to meet a Hollywood agent, later apparently Warner Brothers was seeking a new actor to replace aan actor who'd died, and Reagan earned this spot. He took a screen test for Warner Brothers, and the studio immediately offered him $200- a-week contract. Later from 1937 to 1957 Ronald Reagan appeared in 52 films while working for Warner Brothers. In 1965 Reagan wrote an autobiography which he named, "Where's the Rest of Me?".

After having a record of a successful actor, around the time of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 Reagan had been a member of the U.S. Army Cavalry Reserve. He had also been a member of the army in the 1930's as well. He was still in the army for a couple of years until he went back to acting. When he returned, he met his first wife, Jane Wyman. they were married for a couple of years, and had a family but then they got divorced in 1948. After four years he married his second wife Nancy Davis, who he got married on March 4, 1952. They later on had two children.

In 1954, his film career had been over after struggling for a while. Reagan was then offered a unique contract by General Electric. The company hired him to narrate (and occasionally act) on its new program.

During his life Reagan also had a strong belief in politics, and had followed the democratic party. Later on Reagan joined the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) in 1937, and became a member of the union's board in 1941 and their president in 1947. Reagan opposed the Communists and their allies and in 1953 he became a secret informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)where he reported on Communist activities in Hollywood. In the 1950's Reagan's politics view changed. he Associated alot with many republicans. He follewed nixon and when Nixon won the governor place in california, Reagan completely changed his views and became a republican.

In 1966 he was elected Governor of California and re-e;ected in 1970. later he ran for president of united states against Jimmy Carter and won 489 to 49. Three months after taking office he an attempt to killing was made by him by a gentleman name John Hinckley jr., he later recovered and returned to office.
during his presidency, he made legislation to stimulate economic growth, curb inflation, increase employment, and strengthen national defense.
